I have seen such growth already in these first few weeks of school. Please look at your child's spelling test that I will send home Monday. Already their handwriting is improved and they are more comfortable with the expectations. I can't wait to see how they continue to grow!
Please continue to practice sight words with your children. I have incorporated more opportunities for practice within the classroom, which has helped, but any practice you do at home will further anything done in class. Also, please consider practicing dictation sentences at home. I hope you are enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. I will see your little one on Monday!

Thank you for such great participation in the weekly homework! I hope your child enjoyed it.
Last week was lots of fun. The kids did a great job with all the new tasks they were presented with. One of the most challenging was their first spelling test. I put the grade in as a process grade, so please check it out in HAC. I will send home their tests on Monday, with an attached copy of what the expectations are for a first grade spelling test. I think that now they have seen it and done it, this week will be much easier. This week we will be learning short o and short u. You can practice this at home by coming up with words that contain those sounds. Say the word and have your child identify which sound they hear. Then have your child come up with words that contain short o and short u. Also, don't forget you can refer to the words in the BEE folder, in the ELA information sleeve, for more practice. In Math we will continue partitioning shapes into halves and fourths. To facilitate this, our class is "helping" a zoo reconfigure their enclosures to accommodate more animals so each animal has an equal share. We are also starting to talk about our upcoming zoo trip, tentatively set for October 25. Hope you have a GREAT week! Can't wait to see the kids tomorrow! And just like that we're entering our third week of school!
I hope your child is having as much fun in first grade as I am! They are doing a great job of learning our rules and procedures. It is a huge jump from kindergarten to first grade. The past two weeks we have been working hard at reviewing each sound. Our class has been doing the alphabet dance. If they have not already shared that with you, ask them to show you. They really get a kick out of it in class. As you will see in the newsletter that is being sent home, this week we will begin practicing the short a and short o spellings in words. We are diving into 3D shapes for math, and beginning a unit on germs in science. Also, we are starting Book Boxes this week! This is an exciting step toward building reading independence. Please feel free to send in 1-3 of your child's favorite books for them to read during independent reading. I will try to send them home at the beginning of each month so you can switch them out. I hope to see you all tomorrow at Open House. Have a GREAT week! |
